New York, nine bedrooms, six baths, only $70m

Anyone looking for an apartment in New York City could have a look, beginning on Tuesday, at the one with biggest asking price seen to date in a metropolis known for its high real-estate prices.

Martin Zweig, the well-known stock-market guru and author, is putting his Fifth Avenue penthouse on the market for an asking price of $70-million, the New York Post reported.

The 1 020-square-metre, three-storey penthouse sits above the luxury Pierre hotel and boasts 16 rooms, which include nine bedrooms, six bathrooms, two half-bathrooms, six fireplaces, four terraces, heated marble floors and a 260-square-metre ”grand salon”, which was one of the hotel’s ballrooms and is outfitted with 7m ceilings and chandeliers.

The penthouse’s amenities are sure to please even the pickiest buyer, who not only will have to cough up the price for the apartment itself but also a $48 000 maintenance fee, which includes hotel room service and a twice-a-day maid service, including fresh linens and mints on the pillows.

Zweig bought the apartment in 1999 for a then record price of $21,5-million. The current record for a New York home is $42,5-million for a 1 160-square-metre apartment, paid last year by financier David Martinez.

Real-estate experts told the Post, however, that they doubt Zweig will be able to collect a nearly $50-million profit. — Sapa-DPA
