Bucks have an eye on Zondo

Bush Bucks boss Sturu Pasiya on Monday confirmed that Khabo Zondo is one of the coaches his club is talking to regarding the vacant coaching job at Bucks.

Zondo flew to East London last week to hold talks with Bucks after the East London outfit had relieved head coach Clemens Westerhof of his duties in the same week.

The Dutch coach has been redeployed to head Bucks’ development structures.

Contacted for comment, Zondo emphatically denied that he had held talks with Bucks.

He even denied that he had gone to East London and only changed his tune when told that he was spotted in East London in the company of Bucks spokesperson Lester Piti.

Zondo then said: ”I went there to look for players.”

But Pasiya admitted that Zondo, together with other coaches such as Steve Kompela, had been interviewed by Bucks’ board of directors.

Zondo currently heads Mamelodi Sundowns’ development structures and is apparently scared to incense his boss, Patrice Motsepe, by admitting he had wanted to join Bucks.

Last season, Zondo sneaked out of Golden Arrows and left the KwaZulu-Natal side in the lurch, without informing them that he was to join Sundowns as head coach.

Meanwhile, Pasiya said player-coach William Mugeyi — who was drafted in as stand-in coach when Bucks played to a 2-2 draw against Kaizer Chiefs last Saturday — will remain as caretaker coach for some time.

”We want to keep William in charge of the team whilst we are looking for the best candidate for the position,” he said. ”In the meantime, he appears to be doing a good job.”

Pulling the coaching reins for the first time, Mugeyi was thrown into the deep end and emerged unscathed when his side became the first team to steal a point from Chiefs in the league this season. — Sapa
