Andre Markgraaff, the convener of the Springbok rugby selectors, has been appointed the new deputy president of the South African Rugby Football Union (Sarfu).
South African Broadcasting Corporation news reported on Friday that Markgraaff defeated Dolf van Huyssteen, the president of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, to succeed Keith Parkinson who resigned a few months ago.
The other nominated candidate, Mike Stofile, withdrew his nomination before voting started at Sarfu’s annual general meeting in Cape Town on Friday morning.
The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) and Markgraaff patched up their differences at a meeting in Johannesburg on Thursday.
The ANCYL earlier had expressed dismay and anger at the news that Markgraaff — who was secretly taped in 1997 referring to black rugby administrators in derogatory terms — had made himself available for the position of Sarfu deputy president.
Fikile Mbabula, the ANCYL president, said Markgraaff has expressed his commitment to transformation. — Sapa
