Burger called up for Barbarians squad

South African flanker Schalk Burger was named to the 21-man Barbarians squad on Monday to play New Zealand at Twickenham this weekend.

Burger was one of eight South Africans picked by Barbarians coach Bob Dwyer for Saturday’s match.

Dwyer also named Mike Catt and Chris Jones, who both missed out on selection for England’s internationals this month.

Seven Australians who played in Test matches this month are included along with one Frenchman, Thomas Castaignede, and three New Zealanders.

Burger (21) was named on Sunday as world rugby player of the year.

He will be joined by fellow Springboks AJ Venter, Os du Randt and fringe players Danie Rossouw, Brent Russell, Gcobani Bobo.

All were in the squad for South Africa’s invitationals this month, which included wins over Scotland and Wales but losses to England and Ireland.

Other South Africans in the squad are Gary Botha and Faan Rautenbach.

New Zealand scrumhalf Justin Marshall, Xavier Rush and former captain Reuben Thorne will play against the All Blacks. All missed out on selection in New Zealand’s touring squad for this month’s matches.

New Zealand beat France 45-6 on Saturday in Paris and also beat Wales 26-25 and Italy 59-10 this month.
