Tuncay Sanli scored three second-half goals on Wednesday to give Fenerbahce a 3-0 victory over Manchester United and knock the English team off the top spot in Group D of the Champions League.
United, which still advances behind Lyon, had been guaranteed a spot in the next round of the tournament and didn’t bring many of its big names to Istanbul.
Sanli found a long pass by Umit Ozat and drove it into the upper corner with a diving bicycle kick in the 47th minute. In the 62nd, Sanli drove a leaping header past Tim Howard off a free kick by Alex de Souza.
Sanli also scored just after the end of regulation time off a shot by Serhat Akin.
United fielded a weakened team, with Wayne Rooney, who scored a hat-trick against the Turkish side on his United debut, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs staying home.
Manager Alex Ferguson called on Cristiano Ronaldo, Phil Neville, and Darren Fletcher in Istanbul, but the Turkish side had an edge over the young United team throughout the game.
In the second half, Ferguson made three substitutions, putting Christopher Eagles in for Liam Miller, Gerard Pique in for Wes Brown, and Jonathan Spector in for Kieran Richardson. – Sapa-AP
