A cheap taste of royalty with Camilla’s ring

A British supermarket chain said on Tuesday it will start selling £19 (R210) replicas of Camilla Parker Bowles’s royal engagement ring when she marries Prince Charles on April 8.

Low-price supermarket chain Asda will sell a limited number of rings.

“Camilla’s ring is a timeless classic, and we want our customers to have a taste of royalty for a fraction of the price,” said Justine Reid, who purchases jewellery for Asda.

“We hope that the exclusive ‘Camilla-inspired’ ring will give all budding Prince Charmings the chance to impress their princess this spring and still have change left over for the weekly shop.”

The replica is made from sterling silver and emerald-cut fake diamonds, while Parker Bowles’s ring, which once belonged to the queen mother, is made of platinum and has a square central diamond with three diamond baguettes on either side.

Jewellery experts say it is hard to price the ring because of the royal connections.

Only 1 000 rings will be sold over Asda’s 195 in-store jewellery counters across Britain.

Asda has also confirmed it will produce a more upmarket ring on a made-to-order basis, with platinum and three-carat diamonds, costing £30 000. If any customer buys the ring, it will be the most expensive ring sold to date by the chain.
