Red-faced government officials have been forced to review thousands of road signs just erected throughout Hong Kong after several were found to have been spelled wrong, a report said on Wednesday.
Among the worst offenders were Supereme Court Road, which should have been Supreme Court Road, and Club Stree (Club Street).
Other signs used capitals incorrectly, including one that read JacKson Road (Jackson Road).
Stickers were placed over the offending signs before replacements could be made, the South China Morning Post reported.
The new signs are part of a HK$15-million ($2-million) programme that has seen about 20 000 new and replacement road signs erected in the former British colony.
A government official blamed the mistakes on poor proofreading by supervisors of prison inmates who make Hong Kong’s street signs, the report said. — AFP
