Athletes back in the game after doping bans

Athletics South Africa on Tuesday announced that athletes Isaiah Nkuna (Gauteng North) and Francois Coertze (Free State) have been reinstated for competition after serving a two-year ban for an anti-doping control violation in 2003.

Nkuna tested positive for the banned substance norandrosterone at an Absa Series meeting in Stellenbosch in 2003, and Coertze tested positive for the banned substance androstenedione at an Absa Series meeting in Bloemfontein, also in 2003.

Athletics South Africa also announced that Innis Viviers has once again tested positive for a banned substance. Viviers was serving a two-year ban for a doping violation in 2003, and was due to be reinstated on February 19 this year.

However, Viviers tested positive for the banned drug stanozolol at his final out-of-competition test on February 11 this year.

Viviers has declined to have his B-sample tested and to have a hearing. The Athletics South Africa tribunal will meet on March 15 to decide the fate of Viviers. — Sapa
