Petrol price to rise by 40c a litre

South Africa’s petrol price for all grades will rise by 40c a litre from April 6, the Department of Minerals and Energy announced on Friday.

This brings the price of a litre of petrol to a record R5,02 in Gauteng and R4,89 at the coast.

The wholesale price of diesel 0,3% sulphur will rise by 56,4 cents per litre and that of diesel 0,05% sulphur by 65,4c per litre.

The wholesale price of illuminating paraffin will increase by 49,4c per litre while the single maximum national retail price of illuminating paraffin will rise by 66c a litre on the same date.

During the review period, the average international prices of petroleum products increased, while the average rand/dollar exchange rate weakened when compared to the previous period. The average rand/dollar exchange rate for the period was R6,04 compared with R6,03 before.

The minister of finance in his national Budget speech in February announced an increase of 5c per litre both in the fuel levy and the Road Accident Fund levy on petrol and diesel with effect from April 6.

In addition, there is a 3,14% increase in pipeline transport tariffs, a 1,8% increase in rail transport tariffs and a 1%, or 0,19c per litre, increase in cargo dues effective from April 6.

Increases in transport tariffs will range from zero to 3,5c per litre in the 45 fuel pricing zones. At the coast, no transport tariff adjustment is necessary, while in Gauteng the tariffs will be adjusted upwards by 0,4c a litre and in the furthest zone in Namaqualand, by 3,5c per litre, the Department of Minerals and Energy said. — I-Net Bridge
