Jo’burg police protest against overtime

Just more than 300 Metro police officers gathered at the Metro police offices in Johannesburg on Thursday to continue protesting against working overtime, Metro police spokesperson Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

He said the protests have not negatively affected operations.

”We have 1 600 Metro police officers, so this number is only a fraction.”

Negotiations between the South African Municipal Workers’ Union and the Johannesburg Metro police department (JMPD) will continue on Friday.

Minnaar warned that as the Metro police is an essential service, its employees are not allowed to strike.

”This is prohibited in terms of Section 65 of the Labour Relations Act,” said Minnaar.

The protest against working overtime began on Wednesday.

”The JMPD is an essential service by nature and employees work shifts to ensure a continuous service.” — Sapa
