A number of teachers from government-run schools are being given crash courses ahead of the new school year because they lack proper training in certain subjects they teach, the education department said on Friday.
The remedial or refresher classes are being given this month for those who have to teach science, mathematics, chemistry, biology, as well as in English, Education Undersecretary Fe Hidalgo said.
She did not give figures, but said the classes were being given nationwide because in certain of these subjects, more than half the teachers assigned to instruct the students were practically clueless.
”We have [enough] teachers, but on certain subject areas in high school, we need majors to teach that subject area,” Hidalgo told reporters.
”More than 50% in one subject area are teaching the subject for which they did not major in,” she said. – Sapa-AFP
