Close to 200 people – from students, parents and teachers to community leaders – got together on a Saturday in May to transform the dump of a school into a vibrant centre of learning.
They repaired windows, the roof and toilets, painted the woodwork and swept up piles of trash at Molatsane High School.
The community put its efforts together in response to the government’s declaration of 2002 as ‘The year of the volunteer”. All offered their services free of charge.
A definite drawcard for the workers was the food, beer and music provided for them so they could party as they worked. This, and the materials to upgrade the school, was paid for by the school’s governing body.
