Exciting training programmes are on offer for Ekurhuleni teachers at the Sibikwa Community Theatre Project in Benoni. This is the seventh year that Sibikwa will be offering courses and there are a number of options on the menu.
The workshops are for teachers who wish to use Educational Drama to unleash the creative potential of learners in any Learning Area or subject, in any grade.
There are eight courses running at different times from February to September. Some of the courses are offered in sets of ten workshops, some in sets of four.
The first sets of workshops are starting on 26 January 2004 and they are targeting teachers who attended Sibikwa’s programmes for Natural Sciences and Technology teachers in 2003. These teachers will have the opportunity to work co-operatively on planning, piloting and demonstrating sets of lessons for Gr 4 – 6 learners.
Two more sets of workshops are beginning on 11 and 12 February 2004 respectively. They are Introduction to Educational Drama, for teachers who have no experience or training in the use of role-play as a teaching strategy and Advanced Drama Teaching Strategies, for more experienced Arts & Culture teachers and those who have previously attended Sibikwa’s programmes.
The workshops are practical and interactive. The teachers also receive notes and lesson plans. Most of the workshops are held at Sibikwa’s premises in Benoni South and start at 14h30.
‘Teachers value our programmes because they equip them with a wide range of skills and ideas and help them to implement the principles of the OBE curriculum and the Revised National Curriculum Statement,” observes programme co-ordinator Vanessa Bower.
Costs vary from R50 for the shorter courses to R200 for a longer set of workshops. If five teachers from one school attend the various programmes, the fee is R600.
Sibikwa invites teachers to attend the launch of their programmes at the Sibikwa Theatre on 04 February 2004, where facilitators will demonstrate what is on offer. Teachers wanting more information or to book for courses should contact Kenny or Hloni as soon as possible on 011 422-2132.
