Gender equity is everybody’s business

There are times to run and hide.

And then there are times to stand up and be counted.

the Teacher and Unicef, in partnership with the Department of Education, believe now is the time for girls and women to dig in their heels and insist on their rightful place in society.

We are creating this section in the Teacher with the aim of putting gender issues on the table at our schools. We believe that schools are the right place to stir up debate around this important issue — not only because gender-based violence often occurs on the school premises, but also because schools play a vital role in moulding our nation’s youngsters.

Stand up will be reminding everyone that our Constitution guarantees all of us rights, and that to bring these rights to life for all — particularly women — takes work from all of us.

Watch this space for gender-related features, profiles and information each month.

And in the meantime, Stand up for your rights.
