ID to contest local govt elections

The Independent Democrats (ID) will contest the local government elections in all nine provinces in November, it announced on Sunday after a meeting of its national executive committee (NEC).

It had already launched the process of nominating candidates for the election, the ID said in a statement.

It said it would soon start a campaign to help members with voter registration and applications for identity documents.

Housing would head the list of the issues on which it would fight its campaign, followed by poor service delivery, high salaries of municipal managers, corruption in municipalities, the rooting out of incompetence of municipal staff, and crime in communities.

Expressing its dissatisfaction with the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) decision to establish electoral units within local municipalities, the ID said it maintained the move would compromise the integrity of the electoral processes. – Sapa
