Shootings at two schools in Gauteng on Tuesday claimed the lives of a principal and a youth.
The woman principal was shot dead in Soweto and a pupil was arrested for allegedly killing a youth in Pretoria, police said.
Nthabiseng Nkoni, the 49-year-old principal of Asha Pre-School in Mapetla, Soweto, was shot dead in her office, said police spokesperson Sergeant Richard Munyai.
He said police were searching for the principal’s husband in connection with the killing.
Before the shooting, a man arrived at the school after the gates had been locked at 11.15am.
Munyai said staff members knew the man and opened the gate for him.
The principal and the man stood talking outside the school building for while, before going inside to continue their discussion in Nkoni’s office.
Teachers were feeding children when they heard two gunshots from the office. The man walked out of the office still holding the firearm.
”He put it back in the holster and demanded the key to the gates,” said Munyai. The man then walked away. Nkoni was shot in the back of the head and in her right
shoulder. Police found two spent cartridges and one live round at the scene.
Munyai said it was believed the man was living in White City, Soweto.
In the second incident, a 17-year-old schoolboy allegedly shot dead 18-year-old Marcel Davis outside a school in Eersterus, said Pretoria police spokesperson Captain Piletji Sebola.
The two were arguing in an open space near the school when the pupil allegedly fired several shots at the apparently unarmed Davis.
”He died at the scene from a single shot to his stomach,” Sebola said.
Police arrested the pupil at his brother’s business. Sebola said the firearm used in the incident had not yet been found. – Sapa
