One killed, many injured in bus crash

One person was killed and 61 people were injured when a bus overturned on the Mabopane highway on Friday morning, Tshwane metro police reported.

A bus and three other vehicles were involved in the accident, said Superintendent Force Themba.

One of the vehicles had caught fire, and three fire engines and 18 ambulances were at the scene.

The 61 injured, 43 of them seriously hurt, were being transported to various hospitals.

Officials were redirecting traffic along alternative routes to Rosslyn, Themba said.

Four-truck pile-up

Meanwhile, a passenger was killed and two people seriously injured in an accident involving four trucks on the R72 near Port Alfred on Friday morning, Eastern Cape police reported.

Captain Mali Govender said a truck travelling towards East London collided with a stationary truck and veered into the opposite lane of oncoming traffic shortly after midnight.

”A truck travelling in the opposite direction tried to avoid the oncoming truck, swerved and then jack-knifed. A fourth truck caught alight after it collided with the other vehicles.”

Govender said a case of culpable homicide is under investigation. — Sapa
