Tight security following KZN taxi violence

Intensive security measures were in place in KwaDukuza on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast on Monday after taxis were forced to stop all operations at midnight on Sunday.

This comes after a tribunal was set up to look into the violence between the rival Stanger and KwaMaphumulo taxi associations in which 14 people have died in the past two months.

”This morning, people in the area were transported by buses, which were escorted by members of the police force,” said Nonkululeko Mbatha, spokesperson for KwaZulu-Natal transport minister Bheki Cele, on Monday.

Mbatha said the tribunal will sit on Wednesday to try to find answers to the taxi war, which has been going on since 1989.

She said police officers, as well as members of the police’s public transport enforcement unit and the province’s road-traffic inspectorate, are monitoring the situation in the town. Three roadblocks were set up in the area on Monday.

”At this stage, there have been no incidents and it seems as if taxis on both sides are complying,” said Mbatha. — Sapa
