Teacher’s ‘head smashed beyond recognition’

A 48-year-old schoolteacher was shot dead in Ekhombe, in the Nkandla area, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

”Teressa Mbanjwa was found dead in her cottage around 8am on Wednesday with her head smashed beyond recognition. It is suspected that she was shot at close range the previous night,” Captain Vusi Mbatha said.

He said the killing had disrupted classes at Golozela High and the Macela High School, where Mbanjwa was a teacher.

”The community is afraid, including the school kids,” Mbatha said.

In a separate incident in the same area, 43-year-old Thulani Ngubane was shot dead by gunmen, in a possible family feud on Wednesday morning around 11.30am.

”Three men came and pretended to report a sad message to the family, and when the family attended to them, they attacked them with guns,” Mbatha said.

Ngubane’s brother was injured in the attack and was recovering at a local hospital.

Police had been deployed in the area to monitor the situation. No arrests have been made. – Sapa
