Pretoria police work to end hostage drama

An ambulance followed by a mortuary van left the scene of a hostage-taking in Ga-Rankuwa on Tuesday with what is believed to be the body of a woman.

Police spokesperson Inspector Anton Breedt declined to comment on the contents of the white mortuary van.

Earlier, police task-team members were trying to gain access to the nurses’ residence at the George Mukhari hospital in Ga-Rankuwa where a man was holding two people hostage.

The incident began at 6.30am when a man holed himself up with a man and a woman in a room on the ground floor of the residence.

Two shots were heard, said Breedt.

It appeared as though the adjoining rooms as well as the floor above it had been evacuated.

The identities of the hostages were not known.

No patients were in danger as the living quarters, although on the same premises as the hospital, are about a kilometre to the north-west of the main building. — Sapa
