People in England and Wales are more likely to commit suicide on a Monday than on any other day of the week, a tendency consistent with data from other countries, Britain’s Office for National Statistics said on Thursday.
A review of 34 935 suicides in England and Wales between 1993 and 2002 found that about 17% of the deaths occurred on Mondays, while the fewest — below 14% — were on the weekend.
However, the worst single day covered in the study was a Saturday — January 1 2000, celebrated as the first day of the new millennium. Twenty-three suicides were recorded on that day.
”Both findings are consistent with the theory that the day-of-the-week pattern in suicides is related to the effect of a new beginning, rather than employment-related,” said the report in Health Statistics Quarterly. — Sapa-AP
