Portugal to unveil metal replica of Mourinho coat

A museum in Portugal will later this year unveil a metal reproduction of Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho’s iconic grey coat that he wore on the touchlines last season, public television RTP reported.

The replica, designed by Portuguese sculptor Jose Coelho, will go on display at Lisbon’s Fashion and Clothing Museum as part of a temporary exhibit.

“Jose Mourinho is a myth,” Coelho told the television station, who added the cashmere coat has become a symbol of the Portuguese coach’s success.

“All men have a myth inside of them, like a diamond. But that diamond comes in a rough form and needs to be lapidated, and that is what Mourinho is doing.”

Mourinho, who guided Chelsea to their first championship in 50 years last season during his first year with the London club, sold the coat in May in an auction for charity.

A fan paid £22 000 (R248 000) for the coat, which became an object of the British media’s fixation last season. Mourinho’s wife, Matilde, reportedly paid £1 200 for the Armani coat.

Inaugurated in 1977, the museum currently houses more than 30 000 items, mostly clothing items from the 18th and 19th century. — AFP
