Golden opportunity for 2006

For those willing to spend a little extra money to make next year golden, a Japanese jewellery shop on Tuesday put on sale a wall calendar made of solid gold.

The price, appropriately, is 20,06-million yen — equivalent to R1,15-million.

The one-sheet 2006 calendar unveiled by the Ginza Tanaka shop in Tokyo weighs 5,5kg even though it is only 1mm thick.

The calendar, measuring 67cm by 42cm and pressed with acrylic resin, is an upgraded version of an earlier golden calendar the size of a name card.

The shop launched the palm-size gold calendar for 4 600 yen in 1992 and it proved a hit for personal use and as a new-year gift, according to a company spokesperson. — AFP
