Khutsong residents to protest rezoning again

Residents of Khutsong on the West Rand of Gauteng will hold a protest and stayaway on Monday against a decision to incorporate the community into the North West province.

The South African Communist Party’s treasurer for Khutsong, Paul Ncwane, said about 3 000 people are expected to take part the march from the Khutsong Stadium to the police station at 11am.

The community believes it will receive better services from the wealthier Gauteng province. The government has denied this.

”We are going to take a legal challenge. We have got lawyers who are prepared to help us. We will open an account to fund the payment of the lawyers,” Ncwane said.

The community will hold another protest march on Wednesday morning.

Residents have been protesting against the proposed incorporation of the Merafong municipality into North West since the beginning of last month when the proposal for the incorporation was announced.

The government, however, says people residing in areas that are being moved to other provinces as part of the current municipal demarcation process will not lose any benefits. — Sapa
