Many holiday drivers ‘travelling drunk’

While traffic volumes along major routes to holiday destinations declined by Saturday night, Arrive Alive said they were experiencing alcohol related problems on the roads.

”People are indulging in alcohol and many of them are travelling drunk long distances. They tend to over indulge putting the lives of themselves as well as others in danger,” said Arrive Alive spokesperson Ntau Letebele.

”We are appealing to people to have designated drivers and to be extra careful on the roads. It does not mean that because you have reached your holiday destination, you should not be extra cautious. One big smash can result in horrific consequences.”

Letebele said many motorists were pulled over while under the influence of alcohol in places like Durban, Mpumalanga, Cape Town and Polokwane. – Sapa
