Tories embrace podcasting to woo British voters

The youthful new leader of Britain’s main opposition Conservatives embraced the world of podcasting on Tuesday in his quest to become the next prime minister.

David Cameron’s seven-minute MP3 download was posted on the website of the Daily Telegraph newspaper as the Tories enjoy a fillip in the opinion polls.

Reacting to Prime Minister Tony Blair’s same-day initiative to crack down on ”anti-social behaviour”, Cameron said long-term solutions were needed to tackle the causes of social breakdown, not just short-term sanctions and punishment.

”His ‘Respect’ agenda is little more than a bunch of recycled gimmicks,” said Cameron (39) the fourth Conservative leader since Blair, now 52, led the Labour Party to power in May 1997.

Podcasting is making inroads in Britain, following on its success in the United States where President George Bush’s weekly radio address to the nation is available for downloading.

The Conservatives have enjoyed a slight lead over Labour in opinion polls since Cameron became leader in December and began pulling the party toward the centre ground of British politics.
