Shout if you’re against corruption!

More than 60 Indonesians screamed anti-graft slogans at the top of their lungs in a contest aimed at encouraging the public to speak out against rampant corruption.

The loudest yell clocked in at 113,2 decibels — roughly as loud as a chainsaw — and the screamer snared two million rupiah ($200) in prize money, chief organiser Jaya Arjuna said on Wednesday.

Contestants in the Sumatran city of Medan shouted slogans such as “Jail corrupters!” and “Kick corrupters’ butts!”

“Many people, especially officials, don’t have the courage to speak up against corruption,” Arjuna, who is the local coordinator for Transparency International Indonesia, told Agence France-Presse.

He said government officials had refused to support the competition but that funding was obtained from private sources. Transparency International says Indonesia is one of the world’s most corruption-prone countries. – AFP
