Leopards surprise Celtic with victory

Black Leopards surprised their opposition Bloemfontein Celtic when they beat them 2-0 in an Absa Cup match at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Wednesday night.

Leopards were the more determined side and should have gone ahead in the sixth minute when Rudzani Ramudzuli’s shot went wide.

He was rewarded in the 28th minute with a goal that put Leopards ahead. Celtic stepped up the action, but good defence kept the score at 1-0 at half-time.

Leopards continued to dominate in the second half and victory was sealed when substitute Tebogo Mashaba scored in the 88th minute.

Leopards advanced to the last 16 of the Absa Cup.

Ajax advance

Ajax Cape Town also moved to the next round of the lucrative competition when they beat Silver Stars by 3-1 in a match played at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on Wednesday night. Ajax led 2-0 at the interval.

The home side opened the score in the 10th minute when Terror Santini’s powerful shot went in, giving goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands no chance. Fifteen minutes later, Brett Evans doubled the score with a 35m pile-driver.

Santini was unlucky not to get his second goal in the 45th minute when his header was cleared off the line by Elvis Mashao.

The visitors reduced the score in 54th minute when Katlego Mashego’s shot from 20m went in after the assistant referee had his flag up. However, referee Sidney Deysel insisted on awarding a goal.

Ajax increased their lead in the 56th minute when Quinton Jacobs moved down the right and centred, and Brent Carelse headed home. — Sapa
