Stick to chocolate Easter bunnies, asks SPCA

People should not use live animals as Easter gifts, which often leads to their being mistreated, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said on Monday.

Easter bunnies should not be bought or given in the form of live rabbits with dyed fur. They stand a good chance of not being cared for properly after the holiday, spokesperson Christine Kuch warned.

Similarly, day-old chicks are often inappropriate gifts at Easter.

”Examples abound of the fate of these chicks, not necessarily deliberately killed but transported hopelessly wrongly, kept in boxes without adequate or appropriate food or water, sat on, or attacked by pet dogs.”

Kuch appealed to people wanting to give gifts with an Easter theme to stick to products made from chocolate and other sweets.

”Please don’t exploit animals and please don’t support anyone who is trying to make a fast buck out of doing so,” she said. — Sapa
