Unions to march on Telkom headquarters

Striking Telkom workers were to march from the Union Buildings to the company’s Pretoria headquarters on Monday to deliver a memorandum of grievances.

”We will be gathering at the Union Buildings at around 11am and marching to deliver the memorandum at lunch time,” said Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) spokesperson Mfanafuthi Sithebe.

He said 13 000 Telkom employees were expected to stay away from work on Monday, and about 6 000 of them to participate in the march.

The CWU, which rejected Telkom’s revised offer on profit-sharing last week, will be joined in the march by members of Solidarity, which hopes to obtain a mandate from its members on whether to accept or reject the offer.

A third union representing Telkom workers, the SA Communications Union, has accepted Telkom’s offer.

Last week’s two-day strike by security guards over a pay rise and working conditions saw looting and violence in the Pretoria and Johannesburg city centres.

Police spokesperson Constable Brenda Kgafela said Pretoria police had deployed several members and vehicles at the Union Buildings.

Although they were not expecting any violence, they were prepared for the possibility. – Sapa
