A five-cent slot machine in Atlantic City disgorged a $10-million windfall for an 84-year-old United States grandmother who promptly received four marriage proposals, according to reports on Thursday.
Josephine Crawford had lost $35 in the machine and was down to the last of her modest stake-money when she hit the jackpot on Tuesday evening at Harrah’s casino in the New Jersey gambling hotspot.
It was the largest-ever US nickel slot-machine jackpot and the largest jackpot in Atlantic City history.
”I couldn’t believe it, and I still can’t believe it,” Crawford told the New Jersey Star Ledger.
”I’m going to take care of my family,” she said. ”I have five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. We are going to have a good time with it.”
Harrah’s spokesperson Alyce Parker said Crawford, a widow, had received four proposals of marriage while celebrating her win with family and casino patrons.
”She said she wasn’t interested,” Parker said. ”She is very energetic, and she doesn’t look a day over 65.” — Sapa-AFP
