Three SAA planes searched after bomb scare

Three South African Airways (SAA) planes were isolated and searched on Wednesday morning after warnings that there were bombs on each plane, the Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) said.

”Information was received from the police around 11.50am this morning [Wednesday] to the effect that there were bomb warnings on three SAA aircraft,” Acsa spokesperson Solomon Makgale said.

”Two planes were from Durban International to Johannesburg International, whilst the third plane was from Johannesburg International to Durban International.”

Makgale said emergency procedures were immediately activated and the fire and rescue teams assisted to isolate the aircraft, before police conducted a search.

”All three aircraft have been cleared and no bombs were found. This incident had no impact on airport operations.”

Two of the flights had already landed, whilst the third flight was due to land five minutes after the warning was received, said Makgale.

He said passengers who were on the last flight were frightened, but that the situation was handled professionally.

The flights affected were SA550, SA544 and SA546. — Sapa
