‘Look after your cents’

Dineo and Chilli M anchor Yfm’s popular Essential Rush show. They spoke to Jocelyn Newmarch about the best and worse investments they have ever made, savings plans, financial advice they would give their children and their personal finance tricks.

What are the best and worse investments you have ever made?

Dineo: The best has been my car. I haven’t had a worst investment (yet).

Chill M: Property and my car collection have been the best. Haven’t had a worst investment yet.

Do you have a savings plan (retirement plan)?

Dineo: Yes.

Chilli M: I have a short-term investment and a long-term investment with an insurance company.

If you do have a savings plan, do you use an adviser or do you look after it yourself?

Dineo: Half the time I look after it myself. I also consult with my adviser, who happens to be my dad.

Chilli M: Yes, I have a broker who updates me regularly since it’s invested directly into the markets.

Is there an investment you wish you had made?

Dineo: Not as yet.

Chilli M: Yes, a family farm that needs renovation in a very commercially viable site.

What is the best advice you ever received?

Dineo: Look after your cents so you don’t have trouble with your rands.

Chilli M: Seeing is believing.

What financial advice would you give your children?

Dineo: Same as before, because if you can’t look after the little bit you have, how on earth will you manage when you have plenty?

Chilli M: Purchase necessities.

What life advice would you give your children?

Dineo: Don’t be a chameleon. Don’t change with every character you come into contact with. Don’t change who you are because that will slow down your development and success. Remember who you were, so you can accept who you are, to make it easier to live with who you’ll become!

Chilli M: The world doesn’t owe you happiness. Happiness starts within yourself.

Do you have any personal finance tricks that save you money?

Dineo: If you don’t need it, just don’t buy it!

Chilli M: I buy goods with R100 notes all the time and keep the change to use later.

What is the worst and best gift you ever received?

Dineo: The worst was a stupid watch that broke every time I wore it! And it never worked. But the best was the gift of life and a loving family, from God.

Chilli M: The worst was receiving underwear for porn stars, and the best was when my mom bought me a car.

Is there was one thing you would do if you could do it all again?

Dineo: I don’t think so ’cause I’ve long made a pact with me, myself and I that whatever action I take, I take with no regrets. See, that makes for stress-free living!

Chilli M: I’d buy more property.

What would you do if you had enough money to do anything?

Dineo: Buy property, property and more property. Oh, and more property, then sit back and watch my money work for me.

Chilli M: Invest in my motorsport company and buy a racing team.

If you weren’t on radio, what would you do for a living?

Dineo: I’d be in marketing, advertising, public relations or sales.

Chilli M: Running my motorsport African racing management company.

What do DJs do when they’re not on air?

Dineo: We work on what we’ll be saying or doing when we’re on air.

Chilli M: Do household chores!
