The final report of the Khampepe Commission of Inquiry into the mandate and location of the Scorpions was handed to President Thabo Mbeki on Monday.
Mbeki appointed the commission, headed by Judge Sisi Khampepe, last year to probe the rationale for establishing the Scorpions and placing it under the control of the National Prosecuting Authority.
Khampepe also had to look into the relationship between the South African Police Service, the intelligence agencies, and the Scorpions.
On Monday she handed the commission’s final report to Mbeki.
”She has been ready with the report for some time, but I asked her to delay delivery of it because it has to serve before the National Security Council (NSC), and I thought when we were ready to convene that meeting she should bring the report,” Mbeki said.
”It represents a comprehensive analysis of the array of data and evidence presented before the commission from which findings and recommendations have been made,” Khampepe said.
”The report will be presented to the NSC which includes all the security ministers and others, so they will study it and we’ll take a decision what to do once that has been done,” Mbeki said. – Sapa
