Suspended Spears chief wants his job back

The suspended head of the Southern Spears, Tony McKeever, wants his job to fight for the rights of the rugby franchise, the Herald Online reported on Wednesday.

”I have advised the Spears board of directors, through a legal letter, that in terms of the Company’s Act my suspension is illegal and needs to be withdrawn so that I can stand up for the rights of the franchise,” he said.

McKeever contended it is vital for him to be reinstated as soon as possible.

”SA Rugby have systematically stripped away the rights of the Spears, and the possibility of the Spears’ participation in the Currie Cup now also hangs in the balance.”

McKeever said action should taken before the South African board of directors’ meeting on Thursday and the president’s council meeting scheduled for Friday.

Spears chairperson Aldy Meyer confirmed he has received a letter from McKeever requesting his reinstatement. The board is seeking legal advice, he said.

The Spears board of directors suspended McKeever with full pay earlier this month, pending a disciplinary hearing.

An investigation was launched into irregularities allegedly perpetrated by McKeever. These apparently related to unauthorised expenses, and neglecting to provide financial statements after a request by the board of directors.

McKeever has denied any wrongdoing.

The Spears heard last month they would not take part in the Super 14 series any more. They would, however, be allowed to take part in the Currie Cup series, provided they organised their own financial backing. — Sapa
