DA leader strikes back at hate-speech pamphlet

Democratic Alliance leader Tony Leon will lay a charge of crimen injuria to investigate the origins of a fake Africa Muslim Party (AMP) pamphlet defaming him and his wife, the party said on Sunday.

”A fraudulent pamphlet purporting to be the product of the Africa Muslim Party [AMP] has been distributed in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain. The pamphlet is a racist, hate-mongering defamation of Tony Leon and his wife, Michal and is an example of

the lowest kind of gutter politics,” DA chief executive Ryan Coetzee said.

He said the party’s AMP partners in Cape Town’s multiparty government said the pamphlet was a fraud and was not drawn up or distributed by their party.

”It is our understanding that the AMP will consider laying a charge of fraud in this regard.”

The pamphlet accuses Leon and his Israeli wife of supporting ”racist and murderous” Israeli government policies.

It accuses the two of being Zionists who, they say, murder innocent Christian and Muslim women and the elderly on a daily basis in Palestine.

”Do you, as a DA voter, condone and support the daily murders of our innocent brothers and sisters in Palestine?” the pamphlet asks.

On Monday Leon will lay a charge of crimen injuria, and will ask the police to investigate the pamphlet’s authorship and prosecute those responsible.

”The DA will lay separate charges because the pamphlet constitutes an out-and-out violation of the Electoral Act,” said Coetzee.

The DA has been campaigning in Tafelsig ahead of a crucial by-election next week.
