Too early to speculate about murder, say police

Police say it is too early to speculate over whether the shooting of Johannesburg businessman Anwar Mohammed was a hit or a failed hijacking.

The 58-year-old was killed at the Glenhove onramp from the M1 freeway on Tuesday night.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Sanku Tsunke said Mohammed had stopped his BMW at the traffic light when a passenger from a blue Volkswagen Polo Classic driving behind him approached his car and fired several shots.

”Police have been informed by a taxi driver who was driving in front of the BMW that the passenger from the VW Polo Classic attempted to open the BMW passenger door around 6.45pm. On failing, he fired several shots,” he said.

”The VW Polo Classic driver also approached trying to open the door to the BMW driver’s side but failed.”

Tsunke said the businessman managed to drive across the street. Mohammed reportedly crashed into a minibus taxi as he drove across Glenhove Road, before hitting the kerb.

Nothing appeared to have been taken during the incident, leading to reports of a hit. Police are still investigating the motive and could not confirm the allegation.

”Occupants of the VW Polo Classic sped off from the scene and a murder case is being investigated by the Johannesburg serious and violent crimes unit,” he said.

Newspapers reported on Wednesday that five bullet casings littered the scene of the crime and the BMW was riddled with bullet holes.

The Glenhove onramp is after the Atholl-Oaklands onramp, leading to the road where tycoon Brett Kebble was gunned down in September last year. Similar questions where raised over whether he had been killed in a botched hijacking or a professional hit.

No arrests have been made after about nine months of investigations. – Sapa
