A local council in Sydney, Australia, will find out on Friday whether playing a tape loop of Barry Manilow’s hits in a car park will get rid of the drag racers who congregate there at the weekend.
”You’ve got hundreds of these car hoons who turn up at the car park and lift up their hoods and rev up their engines,” Rockdale councillor Bill Saravinovski told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
”We’re giving the Barry Manilow music a go because it’s been tried elsewhere and been a success.”
Saravinovski said ”daggy music” had worked for a shopping mall that wanted to get rid of groups of loitering teenagers.
If Manilow didn’t shift the louts, Saravinovski has in reserve the songs of Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, as well as a stack of symphony music. — Sapa-dpa
