The Johannesburg Labour Court has granted an order preventing Ekurhuleni metro police from taking part in illegal protests.
The court order prevents the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) and its members from marching on Thursday as planned, said Ekurhuleni metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago.
”It stops them from engaging in any unlawful protest marches, intimidation and threatening municipal employees,” said Kgasago.
More than 150 metro police officers, who are Samwu members, took to the streets of Thembisa, on the East Rand, last week, accusing police chief Robert McBride of mismanagement and racist conduct.
They called for McBride’s immediate suspension. McBride has denied the allegations, including ever making racist remarks.
Kgasago cited ”disruptive activities” by some participants in last week’s protest as the reason for applying for the interdict.
It bars striking Samwu members from unlawfully interfering with the business or activities of the municipality. — Sapa
