Village People cop gets plea deal in cocaine case

A singer who wore a police uniform to front the Village People disco-era band pleaded no contest to cocaine possession charges on Wednesday, according to prosecutors.

Victor Willis, who led his costumed band mates in dance-club hits such as Macho Man and YMCA, faces a maximum sentence of two years in prison as a result of the plea bargain.

The judge could opt to make Willis spend six months in a county jail and complete a drug treatment programme, according to the terms of the plea bargain.

Sentencing is scheduled for September in state court in San Mateo County, a short distance south of San Francisco.

”His plans are, first of all, to deal with his addiction,” defence attorney Mark Geragos told reporters after the hearing. ”After that, he hopes to get back into creating again.”

Willis (54) was arrested in South San Francisco in March by police that said they stopped him and a woman in a car and found a small amount of cocaine.

An arrest warrant had also been issued for Willis after he purportedly did not show up to be sentenced for convictions on charges of possessing cocaine and a pistol in a neighbouring city last year. – AFP
