The ad hoc committee on the appointment of the auditor general (AG) has recommended that Shauket Fakie’s current deputy, Terrence Mncedisi Nombembe, should replace him when he retires on November 30.
The African National Congress-led committee was reported to have made the recommendation in the announcements, tablings and committee (ATC) reports. The tablings were reported to the media on Wednesday but were printed on Tuesday.
The other candidates shortlisted on June 20 were Abdul Kariem Hoosain, Diatile Elizabeth Zondo and Imitiaz Fazel. They were interviewed by the committee on June 26.
Committee members present and who took part in the interviews included ANC MP and chairperson Vincent Smith, and other ANC members SE Asiya, M Johnson, B Hogan and LM Mashiane.
The opposition were represented by Gavin Woods of the National Democratic Convention, the Democratic Alliance’s Eddie Trent and Anchon Dreyer, the Inkatha Freedom Party’s H Bekker, and S Simons of the United Party of South Africa.
The report said that having interviewed the candidates and deliberated on the performance of each candidate during interviews, the committee unanimously recommended to the National Assembly that Nombembe be appointed by the president as AG in terms of the Constitution.
