What are the best and worse investments you have ever made?
My best investment was buying my home in Mooikloof because it is a great place and I think the value will increase. My worst investment was a house I bought in Seapoint in 1998. Crime went up in the area and the value decreased. I ended up selling it for R400 000 less than I bought it for.
Do you have a savings plan?
Yes. I use an adviser and tend to invest both into the market and into products. I’m happy with the performance of both.
Is there an investment you wish you had made?
Yes, in platinum mines.
What’s the best advice you ever received?
Do unto others as you would have done to you.
What financial advice would you give your children?
Respect the money that you have worked hard for.
Do you have any personal finance tricks that save you money?
Sometimes I am quite good but sometimes I don’t even think about prices.
What are the worst and best gifts you ever received?
I have never received a bad gift as it is the thought that counts. The best gift I ever received was when my wife bought me a Harley-Davidson Fatboy for Christmas in 2002.
Is there one thing you would do if you could do it all again?
No. I live my life to the full and I don’t look back and have regrets.
What would you do if you had enough money to do anything?
I would try to make South Africa a better, safer and happier place.
If you weren’t able to make a living from sport, what would you do?
I would have been a psychologist. People interest me, and if I could help just one person change their life for the good, then I would be happy.
Are there any downsides to life as a professional sportsman?
Sometimes your time is not your own. People say sportsmen earn too much money, but they forget we have short careers and need to earn as much as possible to prepare for life after sport.
What do you miss most when you’re away from home?
My wife and children.
