An armless New Zealand man has been cleared of dangerous driving after being found driving a speeding car with his feet.
Police dropped the charges on Friday after Colin Smith (31) provided evidence he could drive an unmodified car with automatic gears safely, despite being born without arms.
Police stopped Smith for speeding near the North Island city of Tauranga in March.
The highway patrol officer who pulled Smith over for speeding initially believed he had an “attitude problem” when he saw the driver’s seat reclined and Smith’s right foot on the dashboard.
But then he saw Smith had no arms. Smith said he had driven for years using one foot to steer and the other to work the accelerator and brake pedals.
Smith, who has paid a speeding fine, had pleaded not guilty to dangerous-driving charges. Police dropped the charges but said Smith would be required to drive a modified car in future. — AFP
