Youth leaders plan to protest against Mugabe

Youth leaders barred from entering Zimbabwe this week plan to protest against President Robert Mugabe whenever he visits South Africa.

Addressing a press conference in Johannesburg on Thursday, they said the powers in Zimbabwe appeared to be divided.

”People there may be expecting to open up and engage with us, while others are heavy handed,” said Young Communist League national secretary Buti Manamela, one of nine leaders denied entry on Wednesday.

They said they had made plans to meet government, opposition and civil society representatives.

The youth leaders, whose organisations jointly belong to the Progressive Youth Alliance, noted that Zimbabwe security officials had even been on board the flight to Harare.

”When we arrived on the other side they were part of the 50-odd officials who led us around.”

At the press conference, Nkosinathi Tshuma of the Crisis in Zimbabwe coalition, which is based in Johannesburg, said Zimbabweans living in South Africa would be organised to support protests against Mugabe on his visits. — Sapa
