Hurricane Gordon causes Ryder Cup chaos

Fears that the 36th Ryder Cup could be disrupted by bad weather mounted on Wednesday when gale force winds forced organisers to close the K Club course to spectators and non-essential staff.

Both the European and United States teams were forced to remain in their locker rooms as practice rounds scheduled for the morning were postponed.

Winds gusting at up to 64kph were creating a risk of injury from falling debris as the tail end of Hurricane Gordon swept in from the Atlantic.

”Severe winds … have necessitated that we close the K Club to spectators and all non-essential staff,” a statement from organisers said.

”The decision has been taken in the interests of spectator safety.”

Organisers were due to review the decision later in the morning but with similar conditions expected to continue into Thursday there were fears the course could be left too saturated for the match to start on schedule Friday morning. — AFP
