Bung scandal overblown, says Keegan

Former England boss Kevin Keegan said the bung scandal engulfing English football was a storm in a tea cup.

Though Keegan managed Newcastle, Fulham and Manchester City in a high-profile career he said he never once came across irregular payments in more than 13 years in management.

The 55-year-old also believes the claims made in the BBC Panorama programme Undercover: Football’s Dirty Secrets lack substance.

Speaking at his new football centre near Glasgow, Keegan said: ”I have been asked about bungs and I can honestly say that, in all my time in the game, I have never experienced it myself.

”When I heard about the Panorama programme, I thought ‘Right, I’ll watch this’ but, to be honest, there was not so much in there.

”There was a lot of talk and a lot of hype but, having watched it, I still think the same way now — that there’s not much going on. I am not saying it has never happened — it probably has and we may never find out — but, as far as I am concerned, it has never happened to me.

”I know some of the agents involved in it and, when I had dealings with them, it was nothing other than completely above board.

”Anyway, what is happening in most clubs now is that managers are picking the players and, when it comes to doing transfers — because of the size of them — it is being handed over to the chairpersons or chief executives.” — AFP
