The 20-year-old man who was driving for singer Lebo Mathosa when she was in a fatal accident has given an affidavit about the event, East Rand police said on Friday.
Superintendent Andy Pieke confirmed that the man gave his statement to police but did not divulge further information.
”We cannot release his name until he appears in court,” said Pieke, before adding that the director of public prosecutions would decide if the case should go to court.
Mathosa was killed on Monday morning on the N3 highway near Germiston on the East Rand.
It was reported that she was flung out of her Toyota Prado when the driver lost control and the vehicle and crashed into a tree.
Mathosa (29) sustained extensive internal injuries and died on the scene.
The driver, identified as ”Nhlanhla” by the Sowetan newspaper, was uninjured.
On Thursday, a memorial service at the Sandton Convention Centre saw scores of friends and family paying their last respects to Mathosa.
Many were brought to tears during a 10-minute video of the star’s life on and off the stage.
While some sang tributes to her, others were too overcome with emotion.
Mathosa’s former band members from the group Boom Shaka were also brought to tears when one of them fell to the ground in grief during the band’s tribute.
But amidst the loving words and funny recollections of Mathosa’s life, a call for forgiveness for the driver was met with approving cheers.
The nearly 1 500-strong crowd agreed when Eugene Mthethwa of the group Trompies said: ”Let’s forgive the man they call the driver. There is no pain greater than self-condemnation.”
However, the man did not attend the memorial service.
According to friends he was receiving counselling for the accident. — Sapa
