Fraud convict Schabir Shaik suffered a mild stroke shortly after beginning his prison term at the Qalakabusha Prison in Empangeni, the Sunday Independent reported.
Shaik was initially treated for hypertension after his transfer to Qalakabusha from the Westville prison on November 9, the day he begin his 15-year sentence for fraud and corruption.
On November 25 Shaik suffered a ”mild” stroke resulting in his admittance to St Augustine’s, a private hospital in Durban, the report said.
Shaik’s brothers Mo and Yunus confirmed the stroke to the paper on Sunday and described it as ”mild”.
Mo Shaik said: ”I will only say this that, given what happened to Shaik last Saturday, media suggestions that he went to hospital as [a] scam, because prison life was not agreeing with him or some such rubbish, are, to put it mildly, inappropriate.”
Meanwhile, the paper also reported that Tony Yengeni went on a hunger strike at the Malmesbury Prison in protest against his privileges being revoked after his alleged parole violations in November. – Sapa
