Food retailer Woolworths warned on Thursday that 17 000 packets of malted chocolate treats bought by shoppers could possibly contain nut allergens.
The company destroyed 6 100 Chuckles Malted Puffs packets from a batch with an April 16 expiry date as the sweets may contain hazelnuts, said spokesperson Dorothy McLaren.
”However, 17 000 packets of 250g Chuckles Malted Puffs with the sell-by date of 16 April had already been sold.”
The batch was on shelves from December 25 to January 10 when packets were removed and destroyed.
Shoppers who had bought the product in the last 16 days and were worried about nut allergies were ”urgently” requested to return the products and would be refunded, McLaren said.
A nuts allergy warning was on the product’s packaging but the company said it was concerned about the risk to people with nut allergies.
Woolworths apologised for inconvenience caused, McLaren said.
