Scorpions deputy director fined for driving drunk

A deputy director with the Scorpions at the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Pretoria was fined R8 000 for driving under the influence of alcohol, reported the Witness on Wednesday.

David Damerell (48) entered into a plea and sentence agreement with the state at the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court on Tuesday.

He was fined R8 000, of which R5 000 was suspended for three years.

Damerell admitted that on April 1 2004 he drove on the N3 near Camperdown while under the influence of alcohol.

”As a prosecutor I am aware of the dangers of drinking and driving and when I am at social functions where I consume alcohol I usually make appropriate arrangements so that I do not have to drive. The incident was pure aberration,” he said in his plea agreement. – Sapa
